FED-1
is well-known Russian Leica II(d) copy.
Some of the early
FED
cameras are called
FED-NKVD
, but NKVD secret police agents were also known to be the Stalin's major henchman, responsible for lives of millions Soviet and foreign citizens.
The cameras were made by former "gangsta" kids under supervision of a teacher Makarenko. He convinced some street-kids who were orphaned after the Civil War to begin a new life. Among the kids were drug addicts, prostitutes, petty thieves but also murderers and really tough guys. They started a "commune" with a near-military-style day-to-day regime. The police was on the losing side against organized gangs, but this teacher's experiment looked like winner idea. They begun, in fact, sponsor his activity. Any police officer even the traffic controller did belong to the Ministry of Interior or as it was called, NKVD (= People's Commissariat of Interior Affairs). While many evil things attached to NKVD were beyond of imagination, a traffic policeman or a crime prevention unit should not to be confused with Stalin's henchman, even if they did report to the same Ministry. The local crime-fighting cops sponsoring with their personal over-time work the erection of buildings and providing some infrastructure for the commune were hardly henchman. It was naturally, the commune was named after Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky. He was the founder of the political police of the USSR. As horrible and evil as it was, the police was also engaged in some other activities from the begin on. As early as 1921 Dzerzhinsky himself became the president of the Commission for the Improvement of the Life of Children. Perhaps, one of the major henchman had bad feelings and wanted to satisfy his better ego? We do not know, but after his death the commune was named in his honor. His initials -
F.E.D.
had a long afterlife and were engraved on millions of cameras.
The goal of the teacher was also to make the commune of kids self-sufficient. The former drug addicts and prostitutes tried their luck with furniture first. Stalin's forced industrialization in early 30-s brought a seemingly insane idea: drug addicts and thieves will make cameras, not furniture anymore. The idea was tossed in the air by a political officer in 1932 - and the rest of commune was enthusiastic - they already had some experience with the tools like electric drills.
Camera production was based on the Leica II which was launched in Germany in April 1932. By December 1934
FED
plant had produced first 1800 examples. More than 700000
FED-1
cameras were to be produced between 1934 and 1955. It is the most significant 35mm camera in the history of Soviet photo equipment industry.
