th
, 2019, The Emperor abdicated (for the first time in over 200 years) in favor of his son, then Crown-Prince Naruhito. On May 1
st
, the Reiwa era began, and
all Heisei coinage from 2019 had been produced – exclusively in mint or proof sets.
Heisei 31 Mint sets were sold out at a mintage of 300,000 in Japan by early 2019. The demand for more was so high that a public lottery was held.
