This is a listing for a rare Buck O'Neil Signed Autographed Chicago Cubs Full Size FS Helmet, COA, Deceased. It is signed by Buck in silver paint pen and he added "1st Black Coach 1962." The helmet comes with a COA from Peter Deyo & Sons Sports. The helmet is in mint condition with no apparent scratches, marks or blemishes. This is a souvenir batting helmet and it is not intended for competitive use. Buck, the grandson of slaves, was a First Baseman and a Manager in the Negro Leagues, primarily with the Kansas City Monarchs. He won a Negro World Series Championship with the Monarchs in 1942. In 12 seasons as a player in the Negro Leagues, Buck was a career .288 hitter. He managed the Monarchs for 8 seasons starting in 1948 and they won 2 Negro Championships and shared another. Afterwards, he became a scout for the Chicago Cubs and was responsible for discovering players like Lou Brock and Oscar Gamble. In 1962, the Cubs made Buck the first black coach in MLB history. Buck stayed with the Cubs until 1988, when he joined the Kansas City Royals as a scout. Buck was the leading force behind the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City and he was its honorary board chairman until his death. Buck was featured prominently in Ken Burns' 1994 documentary "Baseball" and he passed away in 2006 at the age of 94. Later in 2006, Buck was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Pres. George W. Bush. In doing so, Buck joined Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente and Joe DiMaggio as having received this country's highest civilian award. This is a very rare helmet and is a piece of baseball history. It would be wonderful gift for any Cubs fans or any fans of baseball.
