THIS AUCTION IS FOR ONE INGOT (AS SHOWN IN THE 1ST PHOTO). THE INGOT IN THE 2ND PHOTO IS FOR SHOWING RELATIVE SIZE ONLY.
THE SIZE IS 15 MM X 23 MM AND A SOLID CHUNK OF 8.6 GRAMS.

OBVERSE – "Ginza" / "Jouze" ; Ginza is the foundry that makes silver coins; The tokugawa shogunate gave the right to make silver coins to "daikoku jouze"; Cherry blossoms stamped around the edge
REVERSE – "ichibu gin" with the casting date below; Cherry blossoms stamped around the edge
Each bar was individually hand-hammered in precious silver
The ichibu-gin (4 shu) silver pieces were minted between 1837 and 1858, toward the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate in Japan.
Minted under Emperor Komei, the last of the Shogunate Imperial Rulers who ran the country using Samurai
These small rectangular silver "coins" were the “pocket change” of Japan’s fierce Samurai warriors.
In the distant past, those attempting to export these silver Samurai coins from Japan faced the ultimate penalty of death. This fact has made these silver coins of the Samurai scarce and seldom seen outside Japan.
This was perhaps the most colorful era of Japanese history, when fierce warlords and their samurai soldiers ruled feudal Japan. The last shogun was overthrown and power was returned to the emperor in 1869.
In 1869, the Japanese government imported modern minting equipment from Hong Kong and began striking round modern coins like the rest of the world.
From the Battle of Sekigahara in the year 1600, Tokugawa Ieyasu became the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan which ruled until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. This period saw the flowering of urban culture, the building of great temples and shrines and a monetized commodity economy in Japan. The Samurai were the military nobility and were rewarded for their loyalty with land. These interesting rectangular coins were minted and used during the time of Japan's Shogun rulers.
