A vintage Vietnam Era Combat knife, belonging to a Captain in the US Navy.
Evidence points strongly to the US Navy Seals as Navy personnel did not serve as ground troops apart from the the Marine Corps. Specific Marines did serve in special operations attached the SOG, the fact a marine corps insignia could point to this being given as gift from his unit or one of his men.
The USN insignia in the scabbard and in the back of the pommel reinforce the fact the Captain was a US Navy Officer.
Whether the knife was the active duty knife of the Marine or US Navy Seal Captain will not be known, but definitely the knife shows it has been tested and proven in combat.
The knife itself is in excellent shape, the handle and guard as well as any additional alterations were most likely done in the 1970-1980's. The hilt is solid and very comfortable in hand.
The blade is the iconic combat style and displays extensive use and has a incredible look and patina.
The scabbard is undoubtfully the original scabbard which was altered to add the insignias and reinforce the back portion.
