Description
VINTAGE 1952 MALLORY TV-101 UHF TUNER CONVERTED TO PORTABLE AMAZON ALEXA ECHO DOT SMART SPEAKERThe Mallory TV-101 was one of the first and most popular UHF converters from the 50’s, allowing VHF-only televisions to receive UHF channels. This unique tuner has the looks of a 1950’s Bakelite radio with all the functionality of a 2021 Amazon Echo Dot (3
rd
Gen.) Alexa-enabled smart speaker. And even better,
it’s portable!
This tuner is all original, except for the added Echo Dot, battery base and power connection. The original electronics were not working and have been removed, and a battery-operated Echo Dot installed in their place. The case, the dial, the indicator, the knobs and labels are complete and in excellent condition. There is a stress crack on the bottom that has been repaired and is not visible when the tuner is sitting upright. Some of the text on the glass dial has flaked off. The unit measures 9 x 7 x 7 inches and weighs 6 lbs.
Much better than a radio, the Echo Dot performs multiple hands-free functions with just the sound of your voice:
Stream songs from Pandora, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, Sirius XM, and thousands of internet radio stations.
Ask Alexa to play music, podcasts, audio books, answer questions, read the news, check the weather, set alarms, make online purchases, and more.
Turn on lights, adjust thermostats, lock doors, and more with compatible connected smart home devices.
Connect with others - Call almost anyone hands-free. Instantly drop in on other rooms in your home or make an announcement to every room with a compatible Echo device.
Alexa has skills - With tens of thousands of skills and counting, Alexa is always getting smarter and adding new skills like tracking fitness, playing games, and more.
Plays audio from your Bluetooth devices
Excellent speaker quality with rich highs and solid bass - pair with a second Echo Dot for stereo sound.
The tuner comes with the Echo Dot and battery base already installed and charged, but the Dot is powered off for safety during shipping. You must power it on after you receive it. Instructions for setting up the Echo Dot are included. Follow these simple steps:
Download the Amazon Alexa app to your smartphone
Open the hinged back of the tuner.
Plug the power adapter cord into the plug at the bottom of the metal chassis.
On the bottom of the white battery base (located underneath the Echo Dot), push and hold in for a few moments the battery base power button. The battery power indicator lights will come on. A rotating blue and then orange light will appear on top of the Dot and Alexa will tell you that the Dot is ready for setup.
Follow the included Echo Dot instructions to set up your Dot using the Alexa app.
The battery base contains a 5200 mAh lithium-ion battery. Once you power it on, it should not need to be powered back on as long as the power cord is connected and the charge is not exhausted. If you disconnect the power cord to operate in portable mode and you run down the battery, you will need to recharge it and power it back on using the above instructions. Unplugged and used in portable mode, the battery will last up to 7 hours when operated at 50% volume, according to the manufacturer; however, my experience when playing music at normal volumes is that it lasts about 1-2 hours. (NOTE: The Echo Dot comes with a 3.5mm aux output plug that can be used to connect an external device like a speaker but the battery base covers up the Dot’s aux plug, rendering it unusable when attached to the Dot.)
The Dot and the battery base are removable, if needed.
